Description
Ahh, the marvelous pumpkin, its the great orange orb of autumn. This rotund squash never ceases to amaze me. I just love the feeling I get when I see them first appear at farm stands in the fall. When I was a young country girl growing up in rural New Jersey (yes there are parts of New Jersey that are rural), my family decided to grow some giant pumpkins. We planted the seeds in our ever present manure pile. Within a few weeks an enormous vine covered most of the fragrant mound. Not long after that the huge spheres appeared, actually they were squashed spheres (please forgive the pun). We ended up with four of the monstrous vegetables, the largest of which weighed some 240lbs. We kept only one of the immense pumpkins and gave the other three away to Liberty Corner Elementary School, the VA Hospital across the street and the Sunoco gas station next door. From a couple of seeds and some manure we received many giant smiles. This is the power of pumpkins.
